What you don’t see in the Nursing Home

Take a moment to consider what you don’t see…

I was grateful to attend an Athlete Camp hosted by Mayhem Performance Coaching this past weekend at CrossFit Mayhem in Cookeville, TN.  It was great to be around like-minded people, to workout with some high-level professional coaches, and to listen to lectures by some top professionals in the fitness and competitive space.

In attendance was an Orthopedic Physician, Dr. Amy West, and one evening, we were discussing healthcare.  I referenced my current work as a Nurse in the nursing home and how it often provides me additional insight into why I need to continue to encourage people to prioritize their health and fitness.  My goal is to help people prioritize their health so that they can put off the nursing home longer when they are older, or better yet, never end up there.

She then referenced a presentation she once did titled, “There are no jacked people in the Nursing Home.”  I loved that!  Because it’s true!!

When was the last time you happened to visit there and saw someone strong and with obvious muscle mass?  Have you ever seen anyone there living their most confident and best life?

I am going to venture to say no.

Many folks pursue fitness for aesthetic purposes, and that is fine, but consider pursuit of fitness for your long-term health purposes.

One closing point…I have a client in her 60’s faced with a minor physical challenge at the moment, and her initial solution was to not come to the gym.  I encouraged her with how we could modify her workout to accommodate her present challenge to get her active in the best way she is capable of at the moment.  I then closed with, “do something today that your 80-year-old self will be grateful that you did.”

And that is my same encouragement for you today : )

Make it a great day!
