Failure is a teacher; A harsh one, but the best

failure

Below is an excerpt from my book, Failure is not Final, where I reflected on my successful completion of a 100 mile ultramarathon. For context, my first attempt at it, I failed. I made it 80 miles of a 100-mile race before I decided I couldn’t continue on any further. It was the first race I had ever entered and didn’t finish.

“I learned so much from that failure though. I learned about the shortcomings in my training…so I trained better and differently. I learned about how it is ok to not want to do everything on your own and to let others help you…and I had such a fun time with all who joined me this weekend. They each had an impact on making this such a great experience. I learned that just because you fail at something, doesn’t mean you can’t go back and give it another go…failure is not permanent.

I still can’t believe that it is real that I finished. This is definitely one of the accomplishments I am most proud of. I encourage everyone to take on something super challenging…whatever that might be (doesn’t have to be 100 miles!). When you accomplish something like that…the everyday challenges that arise become so much less challenging in comparison. There is nothing I can’t do that I can’t make a plan, put in the work, and accomplish. There will likely be failures along the way, but that is what makes the accomplishment so special.

For many on a weight loss journey, failure can be frustrating. Losing weight is far from easy. Unfortunately, too many give up when they fail and not recognizing that failure is part of the process. I have successfully lost 50+ pounds and have kept it off for years…yet I still fail and have many periods of struggle.

I am here to encourage you that just because you have failed once, 3 times, or 20 times…doesn’t mean you will be a failure forever. Each failure is an opportunity to learn a little bit more of ourselves and ideally, we should walk away with a new skill or practice that will help us have success in the future.

I’d like to reassure you that the only failure is giving up. I’d like to implore you to not give up.

The good news! You don’t have to go it alone! Myself and my team, we’d love to support you : )
