Goals and Outcomes

goals vs outcomes

I heard something interesting yesterday.

I had an inspirational YouTube video playing for some background noise while I was working out.

The emphasis was on “releasing control of the outcome.”

The speaker went on to say, “surrender is not the absence of intention. You still hold your vision that you desire. Your role is to maintain alignment.”

I thought those few sentences were pretty powerful.

Too many folks get wrapped up in “time-focused” goals. It’s not to say that you can’t have them. If you do have them, they should at least be realistic. For example, someone wanting to lose 20-25 pounds in 6 months is more realistic than the person who wants to lose 20-25 pounds in 3 months.

Last week, in my YouTube video about my New Year’s Resolutions many years ago, I had one to lose 25 pounds. When I set that goal, it was about accomplishing that over a year’s time. I felt I could do it within a year, and I did…but it was up to me to do the work. Like the speaker in the video I listened to yesterday said, I had to maintain alignment with my goal.

I had to eat better consistently.

I had to exercise consistently.

I had to eat my own food from home more consistently.

I had to be overall more intentional about what I was doing.

I kept the vision. I maintained alignment. I did however “release control of the outcome.” I gave myself the year to accomplish my goal, but I didn’t get so fixated on when it would happen as far as a particular date. Have I ever become fixated on a date? Yes. Years ago I needed to be a certain weight for a Strongman Competition. I then adjusted my focus and consistency to accomplish that goal. Again, it was realistic. I had to lose approximately 10 pounds by the last weekend in June and I gave myself about 6 months to do that.

Note: nowhere in there did I say “maintain perfection or focus on 100% consistency.” Nowhere did I say “cut carbs.” Nowhere did I say “eat 1200 calories.” You won’t hear me say those things. If someone does, run from that person.

I have someone that I am working with who has a goal of losing 30 pounds by the summer for a wedding. I believe in them to be able to do it…as long as they focus on consistency on what matters. For their particular goal, that is about 1 pound-ish a week – very doable…with consistency.

Another person asked me if they could lose 10-15 pounds by the summer. I said yes, with consistency. For that person, it’s likely less than a pound a week which again, is very doable…with consistency on what matters.

In summary: hold the vision. Maintain alignment and focus on your goal. We will not always have control over when something will happen, but we do have control over our consistency and focus.

You can do it.

I believe in you.

Sincerely,
