I came across a pretty profound quote yesterday.
It was posted to Mel Robbins’s Instagram page, and it read: “I just don’t want that for myself anymore” is a valid enough reason to stop anything.
That mental framework can have so much application across various parts of our lives. She went on to emphasize: “you’re allowed to change. You’re allowed to want something different.”
It could apply to work, relationships, or circumstances.
Of course, my mind always goes to health and fitness.
Things that prompted me to change:
- I didn’t want to feel uncomfortable in my day-to-day.
- I didn’t want to feel sluggish or low-energy anymore.
- I didn’t want to feel incapable.
- I didn’t want to feel so low in confidence.
- I didn’t want my health to continue on the trajectory that it was. I have family members with diabetes and general un-health and it wasn’t what I wanted for my future.
The only one who was going to facilitate the change? Me. I had to desire something different for myself. No one was going to be able to do that for me.
Once I came to the conclusion that enough was enough, I committed to myself.
That process meant:
- digging deeper into the practices that I had learned from my coaches
- applying my learnings from the dietitian that I had worked with
- embracing the process of learning more about what I eat and how it supports my goals
- giving myself grace when I don’t get things quite right
- viewing times where I fell short as learning opportunities to make adjustments in the future to do better
- un-learning old habits and replacing them with better ones
Improving your health and fitness is way more of a mental journey than it is a physical, task-oriented one.
Yes, there are tasks, behaviors, and practices to implement. However, without practicing and re-training your mind alongside that, long-term success will be far more challenging to accomplish.
In closing, despite what you see around you, or who may or may not encourage you–you can desire something different for yourself.
The key point: it starts with YOU.
Myself and my team, we are more than happy to teach, guide, and encourage you, but ultimately, it’s up to you to do the work.
Too many folks believe they are powerless, when really, they have so much power to take control of their lives.
It starts with a decision to do so.
You can do it.
I believe in you.
Sincerely,
Your friend in wellness and fitness,
Coach Candice
