Wanna be rebellious?
Here’s how.
In the previous two blog messages, I said it takes one small action, then another, then another. (In case you missed those messages, you can check them out here.
Out of curiosity, I also asked Google, “how to be rebellious.” Six (6) actions or beliefs were highlighted.
The first cluster of behaviors was to cultivate an independent mindset.
- question everything: don’t accept societal norms. I discussed this in the previous two emails. Society has accepted behaviors that lead someone to be depressed, tired, and out-of-shape as normal. This doesn’t have to be you.
- ignore the naysayers: shrug off the negative judgments of others. Here’s the thing…no one has to answer for how you take care of your own health other than you. Other people don’t want you to change or might not support your efforts to change because it’s uncomfortable for them. 10 years from now, when you are trying to pay for your medications due to years of unhealthy living, where will those friends be? This doesn’t have to be you.
- set boundaries: say no to requests that drain your energy or go against your personal values. It’s OK to say, “no thank you, that interferes with my gym time” or, “I brought my lunch today” (instead of ordering out). They might put their health last but, you don’t have to.
The next cluster of recommendations for how to be rebellious were to take constructive action.
- think differently: challenge groupthink. Everyone else is thinking that aging has to be this thing where your body deteriorates and you just slow down. I didn’t take steps to turn my own health around until I was 33 and I am fitter now than I was in my 20’s or teens. I have people doing their first competitions in their 50’s. Go against the grain and be willing to wonder, what if?
- explore unconventional paths. Most people are just heading to the doctor for another script to rectify an issue caused by their lifestyle. Instead, you decide to take one small action each day that helps you develop a new lifestyle that helps you feel amazing.
- choose your battles: effective rebellion requires intention. No agenda = no growth. No one is successful by chance and they get better through change and focused efforts.
The beauty of all of this…
It’s never too late.
Be a Rebel.
You can do it.
I believe in you.
Sincerely,
Your friend in wellness and fitness,
