People have been brainwashed towards the wrong goal.
They’re chasing being as small as possible.
They’re focusing on that overall number on the scale. They’re focusing on the next lowest pant size.
Sadly, this is going to come at a long-term cost to their general health. We’re going to see a rise in osteoporosis and increased fractures and immobility. We’re going to see a rise in poor metabolic health. We’re going to see a rise in health conditions as a result of poor hormone function. We’re going to see a rise in poor mental health. It’s hard for me to even put the emphasis on “we’re going to see” because we are already seeing it.
Do some folks truly need to focus on lowering their weight for overall health purposes? Absolutely. However, weight loss at all costs should not be the only goal.
Here’s the goal folks would benefit from chasing: being as strong as possible.
I’m not talking about looking like Arnold or a professional body builder here. I’m talking about strength training and the pursuit of muscle mass to help you be a fully functioning individual, mentally and physically, for as long as possible.
To accomplish that requires resistance training, specifically strength training. Ultimately, I want you to lift as heavy as possible relative to you.
This might offend some folks here, sorry not sorry, but that’s not a 5 pound weight that you can lift 50 times in a group fitness class. That’s not a 3 pound weight that you can use on a half hour spin bike ride. That’s not from holding contractions in a pilates class.
Are those things beneficial in some way? Absolutely. I’ve always said, if the thing that gets you up and off the couch is a Zumba class–get up and go do Zumba!
However, none of those things truly replace actual strength training where you move a weight that offers some challenge. To toss in a mantra of mine here: if it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.
